Demeter's Garden
An ancient Greek goddess of the earth, harvest, grain, fertility, the underworld and the dead, Demeter is one of the twelve Olympian gods/goddesses that reside on Mount Olympus. She is also associated with grief, and sorrow for when her daughter Persephone made her descent deep into the realm of the underworld to be with her lover Hades, Demeter was so distraught that she went into a profound state of loss and sadness, so profound that the land of the earth—of which she is intrinsically tied to, became a place of dormancy, stillness, and death...a time that was known as the first winter.
Many goddesses are associated with plants, and as Demeter’s roots lie deep in the lands of ancient Greece, the plants associated with her are from these lands, and can be used to create incense, oils and teas for ritual, ceremony, magic and meditation, and healing—most especially from grief and sorrow, as this goddess suffered and rejoiced deeply when she lost her daughter to, and then retrieved her from the underworld.
The plant magic of Demeter is that of roots for going deep down into the darkness of your psyche, seeds for traveling in between the realms of the above and the below, and flowers as the expression of beauty, the power of fertility and creation. You can work with these parts of any plant or choose one or more of her sacred plants to work with which are listed below.
